How to make an online signature
Three steps, all in this page. Nothing is sent anywhere until you choose to save it.
-
01
Type or draw it
Type your name and pick a handwritten font, or draw your signature with a mouse, trackpad or finger.
-
02
Choose the ink
Black for most documents, blue when you want it to read as signed by hand. Change it any time; your strokes keep their shape.
-
03
Download or save it
Download a transparent PNG or a JPG, copy it straight into a document, or save it to your account to sign with next time.
Signature ideas for your name
Six common styles, shown in the fonts the generator uses. Pick one to try it with your own name.
Full name, easy to read
The safest choice for contracts and forms. Anyone checking it can tell whose it is.
Initials only
Quick to repeat on every page of a long document, and handy for initial boxes.
First name clear, surname flowing
A readable start that turns into a flourish. Looks personal without becoming a scribble.
Casual handwriting
Relaxed and close to everyday writing. Good for letters, cards and notes to clients.
Underlined
A single stroke under the name adds weight. Draw it in one movement so it looks natural.
Bold capital letters
Clear and firm. Common where a signature also has to work as a printed name.
How to add your signature to a document
Once the PNG is downloaded, these are the exact menus in Word, Google Docs, Acrobat Reader, Outlook and Gmail.
A signature image is not the same as signing online
The picture is fine for everyday paperwork. When a document has to hold up later, what matters is the record kept with the signature.
How electronic signatures hold up →| Feature | Signature image | Sent for signature |
|---|---|---|
| Costs nothing | Yes | Yes |
| Works in Word, Docs and email | Yes | No |
| Records who signed and when | No | Yes |
| Shows if the document changed later | No | Yes |
| The other person signs too | No | Yes |
| Sealed PDF with an audit certificate | No | Yes |
Tips for a signature that works
A few habits that make a signature easier to recognise and harder to dispute.
-
01
Keep it consistent
Use the same signature on every document. A signature that changes each time is harder to recognise as yours.
-
02
Make it quick to repeat
If it takes more than a couple of seconds to draw, it will drift over time. Simpler strokes stay the same.
-
03
Leave some of it readable
A clear first letter or first name helps anyone checking a document match the signature to a person.
-
04
Only sign as yourself
Make a signature for your own name. Using someone else's signature without permission can be forgery.
Questions about your signature
What is free, what is stored, and what an image of a signature can and cannot prove.
[email protected]Is this signature generator free?
Yes. Typing, drawing, downloading and copying are free with no account. An account is only needed if you want to save the signature to Signibility and sign documents with it.
Do you store the signature I make here?
No. It is drawn and turned into an image inside your browser, and nothing is sent to us unless you press Save to your account.
Is a signature image legally binding?
An image on its own proves very little, because anyone can paste it. What makes an electronic signature hold up is the record around it: who signed, when, and that the document has not changed since. That is what sending a document for signature through Signibility adds. Check the law in your country →
What is the difference between a handwritten and a cursive signature?
Here, a handwritten signature is one you draw yourself. A cursive signature is your typed name set in a script font. Both download the same way.
Why download a PNG instead of a JPG?
The PNG has a transparent background, so it sits on top of a coloured page or a signature line without a white box around it. JPG always has a white background.
Can I make initials too?
Yes. Type your initials, or draw them, and download them the same way.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Draw with your finger in the Draw tab, or type your name. On a phone the download lands in your files or photos, depending on the browser.
Can I use a typed signature to sign a contract?
In many countries, including the US under the ESIGN Act and the EU under eIDAS, a typed or drawn electronic signature can be valid. How much it proves depends on the evidence kept with it. This is general information, not legal advice.
How do I add my signature to a Word document?
Download the PNG, then in Word choose Insert, Pictures, This Device. Set Wrap Text to In Front of Text and drag it onto the line. The full steps are in the guide on this page.
Sign the document, not just the image.
Upload a PDF, place the fields, and send a link. Signers need no account, and the finished PDF is sealed with its audit trail.
